번역 과정에 대하여

그냥 이런저런 과정을 거칩니다, 라고만 적으면 별로 와닿지 않으니 예문을 가져와 써 보도록 합시다. SS&E의 The Last Tears in Tartarus, Part I의 한 부분입니다.

 

 

01. 일단 번역할 작품을 고릅니다. 장편 같은 경우 제 생각대로 골라 본 적이 별로 없습니다. EoP, BGP 모두 '그게 그렇게 어려워? 내 SNOB스러움을 충족시키는군!' 같은 느낌이 좀 있었어요. BGP는 어떤 덜떨어진 인간이 하다 만 거 '넌 양심도 없니?' 하고 마저 주워다가 한 거였는데... 어...

 

아무튼, 작품을 고른다면 대체로 단편 위주로 고릅니다. 첫째로, 로맨스는 무조건 피합니다. 그 간질간질하고 낯부끄러운 걸 옮길 자신이 없어요. 하다 보면 자기파괴욕구가 샘솟습니다. 둘째, 제 취향 맞춰서 grim, dark, horror 중 하나 이상을 충족하는 작품을 고릅니다. 블러드본 같은 MLP 팬픽션은 없나 보더라고요. 좀 안타깝긴 한데... 그래도 대충 그냥저냥 봐 줄 만은 한 것들이 좀 있는 것 같습니다. 셋째. complete 상태 작품이어야 합니다. 옛날에 여러 작품 번역을 시도한 적 있는데, 체인질링으로 변하는 작품이 하나 있었어요. 야 이거 달달하다 싶어 잡았는데 연중. 안타깝죠. 넷째. 가능하면 분량은 좀 적게. BGP 해결하기 전에는 기나긴 글을 옮기지 못합니다.

 

02. 일단 번역할 글을 골랐다면 각 챕터 하나당 티스토리 포스트 하나씩을 배정해 새글(비공개)로 작성해 둡니다. 기본 양식은 본문2 본명조, 양쪽정렬입니다. 티스토리 에디터가 단락 구분에 유용한 툴을 제공하는 게 아니라, 단락 구분을 위해 한 줄을 띄웁니다. 문단 구분의 경우 세 줄을 띄우거나 구분선을 씁니다.

 

번역할 때가 되면 포스트 수정기능을 써서 에디터를 불러옵니다. 그러면 요로코롬 번역 안 된 예문이 튀어나와 심장을 압박하죠.

이 짓을 한 편이 끝날 때까지 계속 반복하면 번역이 끝납니다. 가끔씩 쓰다가 제 눈에 오탈자가 들어오면 수정하기도 합니다. 노트북을 오래 써서 그런지 스페이스가 2번 눌리는 일이 좀 있기도 합니다. 당장 BGP만 해도 그런 부분 꽤 될 거에요. 포스트 하나하나 찾아다니며 수정하기 귀찮아서 냅두고 있는 것뿐입니다. 당장 대충 눈에 보이는 부분만 점검한 다음 하염없이 아 이거 언제 끝나나... 옆 스크롤바 가끔씩 흘끗거리면서 적어 내려가는 거죠. 다 되면 대충 해설이나 잡담을 적어두고, 미주를 붙인 경우 한번 쳐냅니다. 미주 달다 보면 TMI가 어마어마하게 들어가거든요. BGP의 경우 그 장면과 연관된 팬아트가 있는 게 생각나면 찾아다가 링크를 답니다. 챕터14에도 한 장 정도 들어갈 것 같군요. 그 다음부터는 없을 거에요. 각 챕터별로 한 장면씩 그려놓은 팬아트가 있긴 한데 그건 해상도가 너무 낮기도 하고, 어디 한 군데 박아두기도 뭐해서... 아마 후기 포스트에 올라가지 않을까요.
